Tribute to John O'Malley
by Kevin Carr

We were all very sad to learn about the sudden loss of our good friend and Honorary Member John O'Malley. John was part of the "Young Crowd" at NJAS in the 1980's. Although he was an excellent Aquarist, he was even a better photographer. His pictures were sought after by AFM, FAMA and TFH and Aquarist's alike. He was involved in the Tropical Fish Industry since he was a teenager. John worked at Reef Encounter until his last position at Central Pet. We both shared the same profession but he was lucky enough to combine his hobby with his work. He had a wonderful wife Nancy who I had known even before John and two beautiful children. He was always there for North Jersey. On several occasions when asked by Bob Larsen, he came through in a big way with donations. The success of several of our events was due in no small part to John's efforts.

What I will always remember most about John, was his quick and witty sense of humor. I remember one fish trip he and I did driving up to Boston in his father's car. We talked about everything and laughed the whole way there. Unfortunately we didn't pay attention and got lost! We found our way and had a really fun weekend. He used to make fun of the types of fish I kept playfully referring to them as beasts! I used to reply to him that this what the fish look like when they grow up! He was always generous. I knew whenever he got fish that I liked, it was only a matter of time before he would call me and tell me that I had to take these beasts away!

I will miss him as I am sure all who knew him will. He was a great Aquarist, fantastic photographer, great contributor to North Jersey and a wonderful husband and father. I will always remember him. He was much more than a fellow hobbyist or NJAS member, he was my friend and always will be. He was truly one of North Jersey's finest.

Rest In Peace John
